The story of Idrees
The Qur'an names Idris among the prophets and says he was raised to a high station; Islamic tradition identifies him with Enoch, whom Genesis says walked with God and was taken. A separate Welsh Idris gave Cadair Idris its name. Idrees is one of several spellings and is in current American use.
Meaningscholars disagree
studious, instructor
Generally derived from the Arabic darasa, 'to study' or 'to teach', though the name may be a rendering of a Greek or Hebrew original — Enoch and Hermes have both been proposed. A separate Welsh Idris means 'ardent lord'. Neither Arabic derivation is settled.

The Egan test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Idrees's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Egan climbed just as high around 2003, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Egan's path sketches the road Idrees is walking now.
