Where it comes from

Our story of Trinton

A Philadelphia merchant called William Trent bought land at the falls of the Delaware, where the river stopped being navigable and everybody had to cross, and the settlement that grew there was called Trent's town and then Trenton. It is about as literal as an American place name gets. The city was briefly the national capital, lost the job to a swamp on the Potomac, and became the state capital instead. The bridge across the river still carries an illuminated sign, put up in the nineteen-thirties, claiming that Trenton makes and the world takes, which was true at the time and is now a rather poignant piece of civic signage.

Fashion outlook

Trinton sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is read correctly at first sight and rarely needs spelling twice.
  • Trin and Trey are both available as short forms and both work on their own.
  • It sits in the familiar family of -ton names Americans use in front position.
What to consider
  • Trenton is far commoner, so this spelling will be corrected to it regularly.
  • The changed vowel is audible, so the correction is about sound as well as letters.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing settled to answer with.
