The story of Triana
Triana sits on the west bank of the Guadalquivir, connected to Seville by a bridge, and it was for centuries a working district of sailors, potters and gitano families. Flamenco as a performed art emerged in the nineteenth century out of that neighborhood and a few others in lower Andalusia, and the specific styles associated with Triana, the soleá and the cantiñas among them, carry its name. In the 1950s and 1960s much of the gitano population was rehoused in blocks on the edge of the city, which broke up the streets where the music had been made. The district's own name has never been securely explained, and the two standard proposals, an emperor and a river crossing, are both guesses.

The Sheela test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Triana's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Sheela climbed just as high around 1959, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Sheela's path sketches the road Triana is walking now.
