Where it comes from

Our story of Tramell

A trammel is a net made of three layers. Two outer walls of wide mesh sandwich a loose inner layer of fine mesh, and a fish swimming into it pushes the fine netting through the far wall and bags itself, which is a good deal more effective than a single sheet. The French name counts the layers. The word then generalized to anything that entangles or restricts — a trammel is also a hook and chain for hanging a pot at an adjustable height over a fire, and a compass-like device for drawing ellipses — and from there to the figurative sense of a constraint. Almost the only place it survives in ordinary English is the adjective untrammelled, which means unconstrained and which a great many people use without ever meeting the positive form.

Meaningnot established

Not established

As a surname it is usually derived from the Old French word for a net, applied to a fisherman or a net-maker. As a build it is a free front and a free ending and means nothing. Nothing in the record separates the two.

Tramell sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1990, with 29 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Tramell sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Back stress gives a two-syllable name a firm landing.
  • Both halves detach as short forms and neither sounds like the other.
  • The spelling is phonetic by English rules and needs no explanation.
What to consider
  • Trammell, Tramel and Tyrell will all be written for it.
  • Stress placement is unsettled, so strangers will say it two ways.
  • Which of the two possible origins applies is not recorded.
