The story of Trae
English took trey from French as a term for the three in cards and dice, and it stayed in that narrow use for centuries. American families then found a job for it: a boy named after his father and grandfather is the third, and Trey became his everyday name. From there it became a given name in its own right, and Trae and Tray followed as respellings. It is now given to boys who are not third anything.
Meaning

The Leamon test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Trae's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Leamon climbed just as high around 1907, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Leamon's path sketches the road Trae is walking now.
Trae sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
