Where it comes from

The story of Leamon

The word is all over medieval English verse and then goes badly wrong: by the sixteenth century a leman is specifically an illicit lover, and by the eighteenth the word is gone. What survives is the surname, which had attached itself to families before the sense shifted, and which crossed to America and moved to the front of the name in the nineteenth century. The ea spelling is the American one and it does useful work: written as Lemon the name would be read as the fruit, and the extra vowel keeps it a name.

Meaningscholars disagree

sweetheart, beloved

If the name descends from the Middle English word, the two halves are dear and person. If it comes instead from the surname Lemon, which may be from the same word or from the fruit, the line is the same at one remove.

Leamon sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1921, with 64 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Leamon sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both syllables are readable, so the name is said correctly at sight.
  • The ea spelling keeps it clear of the fruit, which the plainer spelling does not.
  • It is genuinely uncommon while being entirely legible.
What to consider
  • It will be heard as Lemon and written that way by anyone taking it down quickly.
  • The word behind it is long dead and will need explaining if it comes up.
  • It reads clearly as a name of the turn of the twentieth century.
