Tou
Masculine
Tou is a Hmong name, and it appears in American records for the same reason a great many Hmong names do: at the end of a war in Laos that the United States spent a decade denying it was fighting, the people who had fought it for the Americans had to leave, and tens of thousands of them came here.

The story of Tou
The Hmong lived in the mountains of northern Laos, and from the early nineteen-sixties the CIA recruited and armed them to fight the North Vietnamese along the Ho Chi Minh trail and to rescue downed American pilots. Congress was not told what it was funding and the operation was officially not happening. When the fighting ended in the mid-seventies the people who had fought it were left in a country whose new government regarded them as enemies; many crossed the Mekong into Thai camps and were eventually resettled in the United States, in Minnesota, Wisconsin and California above all. The names arrived with them. Hmong is written in a Roman alphabet designed in the nineteen-fifties, and American forms strip most of what that alphabet is carrying.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Hmong given names are ordinary words and their meanings depend on tone, which English spelling cannot show; the same three letters in an American record could stand for several different Hmong words. Without knowing the tone, and often the family, the meaning cannot be recovered from the spelling, and guessing at one would be inventing it.
Pronouncing Tou
TOO
One syllable. Hmong distinguishes several tones on the same syllable and marks them with a consonant letter at the end of the written word, so the American spelling, which has no such letter, cannot say which word is meant.

Fashion outlook
Tou sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Three letters, one syllable, and no sound in it that an English speaker finds difficult.
- It is a real and current name in a living community rather than an invention.
- Short names travel well and never need shortening.
- American spelling cannot carry the tone, so the name as written is incomplete in its own language.
- It will be read as the number two and as the word too, and children will make that joke.
- Outside Hmong communities the name will need explaining almost every time it is given.
