The story of Torrey
The English week is a translation exercise. Roman names for the days were calqued into Germanic ones god by god: dies Solis and dies Lunae stayed as Sunday and Monday; dies Martis, the day of Mars, became Tiw's day, after the Germanic war god; dies Mercurii became Woden's day; dies Iovis, Jupiter's day, became Thor's day, since Thor and Jupiter are both thunderers; dies Veneris became Frige's day, after the goddess. Only Saturday kept its Roman name. So four Germanic deities are named every week in English and nobody notices, while their Scandinavian equivalents survive far more visibly in the name stock. Thor is the most productive of them: Thorsten, Thorvald, Thorbjorn, Thora, Torgeir and Torrey all carry him, and Scandinavian countries still use them freely.

Old Norse Thor, with ey, an island
Torrey is usually derived from Old Norse names in Thor-, the thunder god, most often Thorir or Thorey, in which the second element is ey, an island, or ver, a warrior. It is also read as an English place name from Devon and as a variant of Tory. As a given name in America it is used for both sexes and peaks for girls in 1993.

The Korey test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Torrey's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Korey climbed just as high around 1977, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Korey's path sketches the road Torrey is walking now.
Torrey sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
