Where it comes from

The story of Tommi

Thomasina was a real medieval English women's name and stayed in use into the nineteenth century, giving Tamsin in Cornwall and the West Country. American naming of the 1950s and 1960s gave women men's nicknames freely — Tommi, Bobbi, Jodi, Terri — and registered them as full names. Tommi belongs to that wave and peaked in the 1970s.

Meaning

twin

From Aramaic te'oma, a twin, through Greek Thomas; Thomasina is the medieval Latinate feminine, used in England from the thirteenth century. The -i ending is a modern American respelling of the household form.

Tommi sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1977, with 47 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Tommi went to 35 girls in 2025, but Tommy and Tomi are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 90, which makes it the 870th most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,197 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 17,859 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 45,922 for Tommi itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled meaning inherited from a very well-documented name.
  • Thomasina and Tamsin both stand behind it as fuller formal options.
  • Warm and immediately friendly, and understood by everyone.
What to consider
  • It is far more common for men, so she will correct assumptions.
  • It is strongly associated with one mid-century American generation.
  • It reads as a nickname, which may matter on a formal document.
