Tomasz
Masculine · “twin”
The sz at the end of Tomasz is a single sound: the Polish way of writing sh. So the name is said toe-MASH, and everything English readers do with those two letters is wrong. Underneath is Thomas, which was never a name at all to begin with — it is Aramaic for a twin, and it started as a nickname for a man whose actual name the Gospels barely bother with.

The story of Tomasz
Thomas the apostle is remembered mostly for one scene — refusing to believe until he could put his hand in the wound — which gave English a phrase it still uses. His name spread with Christianity and became one of the standard men's names of medieval Europe, reinforced in England by the murder of an archbishop and in the church at large by a thirteenth-century theologian. Poland made Tomasz, which is entirely ordinary there and has been for centuries. American records carry it from Polish families, concentrated where they settled, and the spelling has survived surprisingly well given how thoroughly it resists English reading.
Meaning
twin
From the Aramaic te'oma, a twin. The Gospel of John says as much directly, glossing the name with the Greek word for twin, which suggests the writer expected readers to need the explanation. Whose twin he was is not recorded, and speculating about it has kept people busy for two thousand years.

Pronouncing Tomasz
TOH-mash
Two syllables, stress on the first, as Polish always does. The sz is one sound, the English sh, and the a before it is short. English readers reliably produce toe-MAZZ or TOM-asz, neither of which exists in any language.

The Sion test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Tomasz's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Sion climbed just as high around 1912, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Sion's path sketches the road Tomasz is walking now.
Tomasz sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is completely standard in Poland, so it is a real name rather than an ornamental spelling.
- Tom is available in English and needs no explaining at all.
- Tomek gives a genuine second register that Tom does not.
- The name behind it is known in every European language and has an unusually clear meaning.
- Nobody outside Polish families will read the ending correctly on sight.
- It will be normalized to Thomas or Tomas on a great many American documents.
- The Czech and Hungarian forms carry accents that American systems drop, so relatives abroad may write it differently.
