The story of Timberly
The Indo-European root behind timber is about construction rather than trees. Greek took it to domos, a house, and Latin to domus, which gives domestic, domicile and dominant — the master of the house. Germanic took it to the material: Old English timbrian meant to build, and timber was what you built with, only narrowing to standing trees much later. Dome came into English from Italian by way of the same Latin word, because a duomo is the house of God. The name is much more recent than any of that. It belongs to a rhyme set — Kimberly, Amberly, Emberly, Timberly — built off one name that came from a South African diamond town.
