The story of Thien
Vietnamese is written in a Latin alphabet devised by missionaries in the seventeenth century, and it uses diacritics heavily: marks that change the vowel quality and separate marks for six tones. A syllable without its marks is not a word but a set of possible words, and Vietnamese readers cannot recover it any more than an English reader can recover a word written without its vowels. American forms, databases and passports drop the marks as a matter of course, so distinct names collapse together and the bearer's name is, strictly speaking, no longer written. The same happens to Spanish, Czech, Polish and Turkish names, but Vietnamese loses the most, because it uses the most marks and depends on them for meaning rather than only for pronunciation.

The English spelling Thien covers several distinct Vietnamese names differing by diacritic and tone, including elements meaning virtuous or good and one meaning heaven or sky. Removing the marks merges them. The American peak is 1981.
