The story of Thane
Thegn shifted meaning steadily upward — from any attendant to a man of substantial rank — over the four centuries before the Conquest, and then vanished from English use as Norman terms replaced it. Scotland kept thane as a real title, which is why Shakespeare's Macbeth is Thane of Cawdor. The word survived in histories and in the play, and its use as a given name is a twentieth-century American revival.
Meaning
a lord's retainer, a landholder
From Old English thegn, originally simply a servant and then, by the tenth century, a member of a specific landholding class; Scots kept the title into the medieval period after English had dropped it.
