Origin, sound and short forms
Our story of Teya
There is a family of very short American girls' names that appeared together in the 1990s and 2000s and that share almost everything: two syllables, a consonant plus a vowel plus a vowel, stress on the first, an open ending. Mia, Tia, Kia, Maya, Kaya, Teya, Taya, Nia, Zia. Some have genuine sources — Maya is Sanskrit and separately Hebrew, Nia is Swahili and Welsh — and some do not. What made the shape so productive is that it is the shortest a name can be while still sounding like a full name rather than a nickname, and it takes almost any opening consonant. Teya's 1998 peak sits in the middle of the family's run, and it is one of the members without a past.

Not established
No source establishes an etymology. Several possibilities are offered and none is documented for this spelling: a short form of Dorothea or Theodora, both containing the Greek theos, God; a Slavic Teya or Taja; and a Spanish familiar form. Nahuatl and Hindi readings circulate on baby-name sites without support. The name is not recorded outside American use in this spelling.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Irasema test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Teya's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Irasema climbed just as high around 1957, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Irasema's path sketches the road Teya is walking now.
Teya sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
