Teon is an American name of the 1970s and, by coincidence of letters, very nearly the name of the man who edited Euclid. Theon of Alexandria produced the version of the Elements that every reader for the next fifteen centuries actually used, and he is now remembered mostly as somebody's father.

Where it comes from

The story of Teon

Theon taught mathematics in Alexandria in the fourth century and did the least glamorous and most consequential job in the history of the subject: he produced a clean, annotated edition of Euclid's Elements. Almost every copy that survived into the Middle Ages descends from his; for fifteen hundred years, when anybody said Euclid they meant Theon's Euclid. His daughter Hypatia edited her father's commentaries, taught philosophy in the same city, and was murdered by a mob in 415 — which is the part of the family story everybody knows, and it has rather swallowed his.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The American name is built from a short front element and an ending that has been extremely productive in the last fifty years, and neither part carries a meaning. The Greek name is unrelated: it is built on the word for a god and belongs to a different alphabet, a different language and a different millennium. The resemblance is worth mentioning only because it is the kind of thing that gets offered as an etymology by websites that should know better.

How the name formed

  1. a Greek name built on the word for a god
  2. an Alexandrian editor makes the standard text of Euclid
  3. an unrelated American ending becomes productive in the 1970s
  4. Teon appears in the record at the end of the 1960s
  5. used for sons and daughters alike

Teon sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2000, with 38 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Teon sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Four letters, two syllables and read correctly at sight by anybody.
  • It works for a child of either sex, and the record carries it on both sides.
  • It is short and modern without being tied to a single decade's fashion.
What to consider
  • The stress placement is genuinely unsettled.
  • There is no meaning to give him and no origin outside the pattern.
  • It will be heard as Theon, Deon and Leon by turns.
