The story of Tennessee
Tanasi stood on the Little Tennessee River and was one of the Overhill Cherokee towns; traders wrote the name down in various spellings, the river took it, and the state took it from the river in 1796. American place names given to children were ordinary in the nineteenth century, and southern states in particular produced them: Tennessee, Georgia, Carolina, Virginia and Missouri all appear in the records, given to daughters as often as to sons.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The name comes from Tanasi, a Cherokee town recorded by European traders in the early eighteenth century. What the Cherokee word meant is not known; meeting place and winding river are both often printed and neither can be supported. The town's existence and the borrowing are documented; the meaning is not.

The trade-off
- It offers several genuinely different short forms, from Tess to Tenny.
- It names a real place with a documented Cherokee origin.
- It has an American record as a given name going back to the nineteenth century.
- It is a state, so the name will always be heard as a place first.
- Its meaning is genuinely lost, which some children mind and others find interesting.
- Three syllables with the stress at the end is an unusual rhythm for an American name.
