The story of Tej
Sanskrit vocabulary for light is unusually fine-grained, distinguishing the light of a lamp, the luster of a jewel, the radiance of a face and the energy that produces heat, and tejas is the last of these. It appears throughout the Vedas and the Upanishads and remains a live word in modern Hindi, Punjabi and Gujarati. As a given name it is used both alone and as the first element of compounds like Tejinder and Tejpal. The Punjabi and Sikh usage is particularly strong. Tej reached United States records with South Asian migration and had its best year in 2004.
Meaning
radiance, brilliance, fiery energy
From Sanskrit tejas, whose senses run from the sharpness of a blade through heat and light to the personal luster or authority of a great figure. It is one of the five classical elements in Indian philosophy, the fire principle, and the word carries all of that at once. Hindi and Punjabi take it as tej, brightness or speed. It is unrelated to the Spanish Tejas, the old name for Texas, which comes from a Caddo word for friend.

The Vahan test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Tej's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Vahan climbed just as high around 1925, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Vahan's path sketches the road Tej is walking now.
Tej sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A settled meaning with genuine philosophical depth behind it.
- Three letters and one syllable, which is about as portable as a name gets.
- Recognized across Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati and Nepali naming.
- English speakers will shorten the vowel, which changes the word.
- It is often read as a short form of Tejas or Tejinder rather than a name in itself.
- Outside South Asian communities it will always need spelling.
