Tedd
Masculine · “Wealthy guardian”
Tedd doubles a letter that has nothing to guard. English doubles a final consonant to keep the vowel before it short, but the vowel in this name was already short and could not have been anything else, so the extra d is pure decoration on a name that is otherwise as plain as English gets.

The story of Tedd
There is also a verb. To ted is to spread cut grass out so it dries evenly, turning it with a fork or, later, with a machine built for the purpose called a tedder; the word is old, north-country in flavor, and still in agricultural use. It has nothing to do with the name, which came from Edward by the ordinary route of rhyming and clipping that gave English Ted from Ed and Bob from Rob. The two words have simply coexisted for centuries without anyone noticing, in the way that ordinary vocabulary and ordinary names constantly do, and a farmer tedding hay in a field is not thinking about anybody called Ted.

Wealthy guardian, or gift of God
Ted serves two unrelated full names. Edward is Old English and joins a word for wealth to one for a guardian; Theodore is Greek and means a gift of God. A short form keeps neither of those and points to both, so the meaning cannot be given without knowing what is on the rest of the certificate, and often nothing is.

One syllable, said exactly as the ordinary spelling. The doubled d changes nothing: the vowel was short before it and remains short after it, so the letter is doing visual work only.

Fashion outlook
Tedd sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- One syllable, impossible to mispronounce, and understood immediately everywhere.
- The extra letter distinguishes the written name without complicating the spoken one.
- Two long formal names sit behind it if one is ever wanted.
- The single-d spelling is overwhelmingly commoner and will be written by nearly everyone.
- It is a pet form on a certificate and leaves nothing more formal underneath.
- A three-letter name gives nothing to shorten and no room to grow into something else.
