Our story of Tavian
Ours, offered as ours. Romans numbered their children as names — Quintus fifth, Sextus sixth, Septimus seventh, Octavius eighth, Decimus tenth — and the practice outlived any actual counting; men called Octavius were rarely eighth sons. The most famous of them became Augustus. Tavian takes the tail of that name into American naming, where the -ian and -vian endings have been productive for decades. The number at the far end is real and nobody is counting.

eighth
Octavian is documented: from Latin octavus, eighth, a Roman family name from a numbered given name. Whether Tavian descends from it by clipping or was assembled from Ta- and the -vian ending of American naming is not recorded.

The Reynolds test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Tavian's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Reynolds climbed just as high around 1901, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Reynolds's path sketches the road Tavian is walking now.
Tavian sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
