Tavarius ends in a Latin-looking suffix attached to a front syllable that is not Latin and not anything else. The ending is genuinely Roman in appearance, which is the point of it; the borrowing takes the look of an ancient name without any of the grammar.

Where it comes from

Our story of Tavarius

One of the most repeated facts about Latin endings is probably not a fact. The story is that Roman soldiers were paid in salt, and that the word salary comes from it — and the word does contain the Latin for salt, which is why the story is so hard to kill. What the ancient sources actually say is thinner: Pliny mentions a salt allowance in passing, and the word itself appears to have meant money for buying salt rather than salt handed over. No pay record shows soldiers receiving salt in place of coin, and the Roman army's pay was famously and precisely monetary. The phrase worth his salt is later and English. It is a good example of an etymology that survives because it is memorable, attached to a word whose ending — the same one on this name — is doing the ordinary job of turning a noun into an adjective.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No source exists to report. The front is a free American element, and the ending imitates the Latin masculine ending that closes hundreds of Roman names. In Latin that ending carries grammatical information about case; attached to an invented front it carries nothing at all.

Pronouncing Tavarius

tuh-VAIR-ee-us

Four syllables with the stress on the second. The ending is three letters doing two syllables' work, which is why it is often shortened in speech to a single us.

Tavarius sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2006, with 38 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Tavarius sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The ending gives the name a formal weight that a short build would not have.
  • Several short forms come out of it and they sound completely different.
  • The stress falls where an English reader expects, so first attempts usually land.
What to consider
  • Tavaris, Tavarious and Tavarus are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • Four syllables is long for forms designed around shorter names.
  • No meaning can honestly be claimed for either half.
