Our story of Talin
The Estonian capital's name records a conquest. Valdemar II of Denmark took the hill fort in June 1219, and Danish tradition says that during the battle a red banner with a white cross fell from the sky and turned the fight; the Dannebrog has been in continuous use ever since and is generally called the oldest national flag in the world. Estonians called the resulting castle taani linn, the Danish town, and the name outlived the Danes, the Germans, the Swedes and the Russians who followed them. The Armenian Talin is unrelated: a town in Aragatsotn province with a seventh-century cathedral, and a given name used in Armenian communities worldwide. Two places, one spelling, no connection.

About 1 boy in 113,872 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 284,679 for Talin itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
