Talha
Masculine · “a tree”

The story of Talha
Talha ibn Ubaydullah was one of the earliest companions of Muhammad and among the ten promised paradise in the tradition, which is why the name spread wherever Islam did. The tree behind it gave the name its warmth: the acacia is the tree that survives where nothing else does, and its appearance in the description of paradise reads differently once you know what a desert acacia looks like. The name is used across the Arab world, Turkey, Pakistan and Southeast Asia, and it reaches United States records from all of them.

a tree — the acacia, or the banana
Arabic talh names a tree, and which one is genuinely disputed. Classical commentators most often took it as a species of acacia, a thorn tree of the Arabian deserts valued for its shade and its gum. Others read it as the banana plant, and that reading is common in the eastern Islamic world. The word itself is not in doubt; only the species is.

Pronouncing Talha
TAL-hah
Two syllables, stress on the first, with the h clearly sounded between them. The Arabic t is emphatic — made further back in the mouth than the English one — and the h is a light throat sound. An ordinary English saying is understood everywhere.

The Shelia test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Talha's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Shelia climbed just as high around 1965, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Shelia's path sketches the road Talha is walking now.

The trade-off
- Five letters, no silent ones, and readable at first sight by an English speaker.
- Recognized across the whole Muslim world without any need for explanation.
- The meaning is a real thing rather than an abstract virtue, which is rarer than it sounds.
- The middle h is easily dropped by English speakers, which flattens it to TAL-uh.
- Talha and Talhah are both used, and the final h will be added or lost in writing.
- Its meaning is disputed between two very different plants, so no single gloss is complete.
