The y in Sylvia is a mistake. Latin wrote the word for a wood silva, with an i. Renaissance scholars decided it looked Greek and helpfully corrected it to sylva, and the wrong letter stuck — in sylvan, in Pennsylvania, and in every Sylvia since.

Where it comes from

The story of Sylva

The same word is on the map of America twice. Pennsylvania is Penn's woods, named for the founder's father and coined in Latin, and Transylvania is beyond the forest, named from the perspective of Hungary looking east. Sylvan means wooded, silviculture is forestry, and the Roman goddess Silvanus looked after woodland. The y was inserted by scholars who over-corrected: Greek upsilon was written y in Latin, and words believed to be Greek were respelled accordingly. Several such corrections were simply wrong, and this is one of the tidiest examples, because the mistaken spelling has entirely displaced the right one.

Meaning

wood, forest

Latin silva, a wood or forest. The y is a sixteenth-century learned respelling based on a false assumption of Greek origin. Rhea Silvia, the mother of Romulus and Remus, carries the older spelling, and so does the word in classical texts.

Sylva sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1919, with 31 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Latin meaning with descendants on two continents' maps.
  • Two syllables and five letters, with nothing to explain.
  • Sylvia is available as a fuller version with a two-thousand-year record.
What to consider
  • Very few people carry this shorter form now and almost all of them are old.
  • Silva with an i is a very common Portuguese and Brazilian surname, which will cause confusion.
  • The few boys given this spelling will be read as girls on paper.
