Where it comes from

The story of Sydne

The French derivation is the more appealing and the less certain. A family taking its name from Saint-Denis, an abbey outside Paris, would have carried it to England after the Conquest as de Sancto Dionisio, and centuries of English mouths would wear that down to a single word of two syllables — which is exactly the sort of thing that happened to Norman names routinely. The rival explanation is duller and better supported: an English place name from a word for a wide meadow, of which there are several. The name reached Australia by way of an eighteenth-century politician, and reached American girls by way of the city, which means it arrived here pointing at a place that was pointing at a man who was named for an abbey or a meadow.

From Saint-Denis, or from a wide water meadow

The surname behind the city name has two proposed origins: a contraction of a French place name dedicated to Saint Denis, and an English place name meaning a wide island or water meadow. Both are defended and neither has won.

Fashion outlook

Sydne sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is read correctly on sight in spite of the shortened spelling.
  • It shortens to a short form that works for either sex.
  • It is rare while the name itself is completely familiar.
What to consider
  • Sydney and Sidney are both standard and hers will be written as one of them.
  • The missing letter reads as an error rather than a choice.
  • The city is what most people will think of first.
