The story of Susanne
Susanna appears in the Greek text of Daniel in a story about a woman falsely accused and vindicated by cross-examination — a favorite subject for painters across Europe. French produced Suzanne and German Susanne, and English-speaking countries borrowed both alongside their own Susan. Susanne appears in American registers from the 1940s, when French and German spellings carried polish, and peaked in the late 1950s.

lily
From the Hebrew shoshannah. It is usually translated 'lily', but the word may originally have meant the lotus, and it is connected to a Semitic root for 'six', probably from the number of petals. Which flower was meant is not fully settled; that a flower was meant is.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Margery test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Susanne's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Margery climbed just as high around 1921, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Margery's path sketches the road Susanne is walking now.
Susanne sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
