The story of Suzanne
Susanna appears in the Greek text of Daniel in a story about a woman falsely accused and vindicated by cross-examination — an episode that made her a favorite subject for painters across Europe. French produced Suzanne, which English-speaking countries borrowed alongside their own Susan when French spellings carried a particular polish. American use rose sharply through the 1940s and peaked in the mid-1950s.

lily
From the Hebrew shoshannah. It is usually translated 'lily', but the word may originally have meant the lotus, and it is connected to a Semitic root for 'six', probably from the number of petals. Which flower was meant is not fully settled; that a flower was meant is.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Anne test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Suzanne's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Anne climbed just as high around 1915, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Anne's path sketches the road Suzanne is walking now.
Suzanne sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
