The story of Sundus
Textile words are among the most traveled in any language, because the cloth travels first and the word follows. Silk itself is a chain of borrowings: Chinese si, into Greek as ser, giving the Seres, the silk people, and serikos, whence Latin sericum and eventually English silk and French serge. Damask is from Damascus, muslin from Mosul, gauze possibly from Gaza, calico from Calicut, cashmere from Kashmir, satin from Zaytun, a Chinese port. Sundus belongs to the same traffic, entering Arabic from the east along with the material, and then being fixed permanently in the language by appearing in scripture. That is a common fate for loanwords in Arabic: the Quran's vocabulary preserves a number of Persian, Greek and Ethiopic borrowings that would otherwise have been forgotten.

The Shanah test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Sundus's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Shanah climbed just as high around 1977, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Shanah's path sketches the road Sundus is walking now.
Sundus sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
