When Krakatoa exploded in the Sunda Strait, the sound was heard on Rodrigues Island near Mauritius, close to three thousand miles away, where a police chief logged it as distant gunfire. Barographs around the world recorded the pressure wave circling the planet several times over the following days. The blast itself is estimated to have exceeded any other sound in the instrumental record; close to the island the pressure would have been beyond what an ear can register as sound at all. Most of the deaths were from the tsunamis rather than the explosion, and ash in the upper atmosphere cooled the northern hemisphere measurably for the next several years and gave the world unusually vivid sunsets, which painters noticed before scientists explained them.
