Where it comes from

The story of Suleiman

Süleyman I ruled from 1520 to 1566, doubled the empire, besieged Vienna, and reformed the whole legal code — Ottomans called him Kanuni, the Lawgiver. Sulayman is separately a prophet in the Quran who commands the jinn and understands birds. The name is used across the Muslim world and is in current American use.

Meaning

peaceful, of peace

From the Hebrew Shelomo, built on shalom, 'peace' — a word that means wholeness as much as the absence of war. Arabic took it as Sulayman and Turkish as Süleyman. The Hebrew is ordinary and the meaning undisputed across all three.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The peace meaning is transparent and undisputed in Hebrew and Arabic alike.
  • One of the most consequential rulers of the sixteenth century carries it.
  • It is used across Arabic, Turkish, Malay and Indonesian naming.
What to consider
  • Several transliterations are in use and it will need dictating.
  • Three syllables make it long for everyday use.
  • Solomon is the form English speakers will assume as an equivalent.
