Where it comes from

The story of Sula

The Norse word came into scientific Latin in the eighteenth century when naturalists needed a genus name and reached for the local one, which is how a fair number of seabirds got theirs. The bird is worth the detour. It has no external nostrils, because they would fill on impact; its eyes are set forward for binocular judgment of depth; and the air sacs work like the crumple zone of a car. The name also belongs to a novel: Toni Morrison's second book, published in 1973, is called Sula after its central figure, and it is the reason a good many American readers have met the word at all.

gannet

Sula is Old Norse for a gannet and is the genus name for the whole family. As a personal name it may also be a short form of Ursula, from Latin ursa, a bear, or of Slavic and Greek names ending in -sula. None has been shown for the American entries.

Sula sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1921, with 34 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Four letters and two syllables, with nothing to explain.
  • It names a real and spectacular bird, which is easy to tell a child about.
  • It is genuinely rare, so a child will almost certainly never meet another.
What to consider
  • Very few people carry it now and almost all of them are old.
  • The first vowel is said two ways and the spelling settles neither.
  • People will assume it is short for Ursula and will ask.
