Suanne
Feminine · “lily”
Suanne fuses a clipping with a full name, which is the middle case between two names joined and two nicknames joined. The front is Susan cut to one syllable; the back is Anne, complete and unaltered. The name behind the front has a story attached to it that Protestant and Catholic bibles disagree about, and the disagreement is old and specific.

The story of Suanne
The story of Susanna and the elders appears at the end of the book of Daniel in Greek bibles and not at all in the Hebrew one. Two judges spy on a woman bathing, threaten to accuse her of adultery unless she submits, and are caught out by a young Daniel who interviews them separately and finds their accounts do not match. It is one of the earliest cross-examination scenes in literature. When the Reformation established the Hebrew canon as the basis for Protestant bibles, the passage went into the apocrypha, and Catholic and Protestant readers have had different books ever since. The woman kept the name in both, which is more than the story managed.
Meaning
lily, and favor
The first parent is a Hebrew word for a lily, itself probably borrowed from Egyptian; the second is the Hebrew word for favor or grace. Both readings are settled. The compound has no separate sense, and the clipping at the front carries the meaning at one remove while the full name at the back carries it directly.

soo-ANN
Two syllables with the stress at the back. Written solid it resists being split, and some families say SOO-an with the weight at the front instead, which the spelling permits and which sounds like a different name.
