Stephenie follows the English Stephen where Stephanie follows the Greek. Stephanos was a wreath — the crown of leaves given to a victor at the games, not a king's crown — and the first Christian martyr carried the name, which is either a coincidence or the reason he is remembered under it.

Where it comes from

The story of Stephenie

English wore Stephanos down to Stephen, keeping the ph and moving the vowel; French made Etienne, which looks unrelated and is the same name. The women's form came into English from French as Stephanie, following the Greek pattern with an a. Stephenie is the version that follows the English men's name instead, taking Stephen and adding an ending — which is a defensible construction and produces a spelling that English readers stumble over, because they know the name and not this arrangement of it.

Meaning

crown; wreath

Greek stephanos is a wreath or garland, specifically the one placed on the head of a winner at the games or an honored guest at a feast; it is not a royal crown, which Greek called something else. The verb stephein means to encircle. The derivation is not disputed. The martyr described in Acts, stoned outside Jerusalem, is the first person the text calls a martyr, and the coincidence with a victor's wreath was not lost on early Christian writers.

STEF-uh-nee

STEF-uh-nee, three syllables, stress at the front, the middle reduced. Stephanie is said identically — the middle vowel is unstressed and an a and an e are the same sound there, which is why this spelling exists at all.

Stephenie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1974, with 199 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Stephenie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The Greek behind it is concrete, and a victor's wreath is a better image than a crown.
  • Steph and Stevie are both usable short forms in different registers.
  • It follows the English men's name consistently, which the standard spelling does not.
What to consider
  • Stephanie is the standard spelling and this will be corrected toward it on essentially every document.
  • Because the difference is inaudible, defending the e is a purely visual argument.
  • Stefanie, Stephany and Stephenie are all in use, so the name is dictated in full.
