The story of Spenser
Great medieval households were administrations, and their offices became surnames: a steward ran the estate, a chamberlain the private rooms, a marshal the horses, a constable the garrison, a butler the wine and a despenser the provisions. Spencer and Spenser both come from the last of those. Edmund Spenser, who wrote The Faerie Queene between 1590 and 1596, used the s spelling and invented a nine-line stanza that poets have been using ever since; his family connection to the Spencers of Althorp was claimed rather than demonstrated. The 1980s peak of the s spelling in America follows a detective series that ran from 1985 and made the unusual form briefly familiar.
