Where it comes from

The story of Simonne

The French feminine of the name belongs, for most readers, to one woman. Simone de Beauvoir spent three years on a book that set out to answer what she thought was a small question about what it had meant to be a woman in her own life, and produced a nine-hundred-page argument that one is not born a woman but becomes one — which reframed the subject for everybody who came after. The Vatican put it on the index of forbidden books. She refused the label feminist for two decades afterward, on the grounds that the problem was economic and would be solved by other means, and then changed her mind in public and said so.

He has heard

The Hebrew name Shimon is built on a verb about hearing. But Greek already had a word that sounded almost the same, meaning snub-nosed, and Greek-speaking Jews writing the name in Greek letters used that existing word — so the form that reached Europe is a Hebrew name wearing a Greek word's clothes, and which one a given ancient bearer meant is often impossible to say.

Fashion outlook

Simonne sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The name is elegant, international and carried by women worth being named after.
  • The back stress gives it a strong finish.
  • It has forms across Europe that a traveler would recognize.
What to consider
  • Simone is the standard spelling and the doubled n will be dropped constantly.
  • Americans add a syllable that French does not have.
  • The spelling is recorded for both sexes, and the boys' share is small but real.
