The story of Sigurd
The Völsunga saga and the Poetic Edda give Sigurd the dragon Fafnir, the cursed gold, the valkyrie Brynhild, and a death by betrayal; the German Nibelungenlied tells a version of the same story with Siegfried, and Wagner made an opera cycle of it. The name stayed ordinary in Norway, Denmark and Iceland — several Norwegian kings carried it. Norwegian and Danish emigration to the American upper Midwest brought it in the nineteenth century, and the American peak in 1891 sits at the height of that migration; it has been rare since 1940.

From Old Norse Sigurðr, from sigr, victory, and a second element generally read as vǫrðr, a guardian or warden. The reading is settled and both elements are transparent. The German cognate Siegfried has the same first element and a different second, frid, peace, which is why the two heroes' names look similar but are not the same word.
