The story of Shruti
The transmission methods are the extraordinary part. Vedic recitation developed a series of patterns in which the words of a verse are repeated in fixed permutations — forwards, backwards, in overlapping pairs, in braided sequences — so that any word out of place breaks the pattern audibly. A student learned the text several ways at once, and a mistake could not survive the cross-check. Linguists comparing recitation traditions across India have found remarkably little drift over enormous stretches of time. The word for that whole system is shruti, and it draws a line: what was heard is one kind of authority, and what was remembered and written afterwards is another.
Meaning
that which is heard
Sanskrit shruti, from a root meaning to hear. It names the category of revealed scripture, as against smriti, that which is remembered — the derived texts. It is also the word for a microtonal interval in Indian classical music, of which there are twenty-two to the octave.

The Rebbeca test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Shruti's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Rebbeca climbed just as high around 1974, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Rebbeca's path sketches the road Shruti is walking now.
Shruti sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A settled Sanskrit meaning that names one of the central concepts of a whole tradition.
- Two syllables and six letters, short by the standards of Sanskrit names.
- It is a current, ordinary name in India rather than a revival.
- The shr opening is difficult for English speakers and will be simplified.
- Shruti and Shruthi are both transliterated, so the spelling will be queried.
- Outside South Asian families the meaning will need explaining every time.
