Shirelle can be read two ways and both are real. As Hebrew it joins the word for a song to a form of the divine name. As American English it is Shirley with a French-looking ending swapped onto it. Nothing in the record separates the families who meant one from those who meant the other.

Where it comes from

Our story of Shirelle

Hebrew makes a superlative by putting a noun in front of its own plural, so the greatest song is a song of songs, the innermost room of the temple is the holy of holies, and a supreme ruler is a king of kings. English does not do this, which is why the constructions sound so strange and grand in translation — they are ordinary grammar working normally, not poetry. The book called the Song of Songs is therefore claiming to be the best song, a title its editors gave it. What follows is a sequence of love poems in two voices with no religious content stated anywhere and no mention of God, which is why its inclusion in the canon was argued about, and why it has been read allegorically for two thousand years by people who needed it to be about something else.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The Hebrew reading gives a song of God, from a word meaning song joined to the element that ends Michael and Daniel. The American reading gives a respelling of a surname-name with a borrowed ending. Both accounts are plausible for the decades this spelling appears in, and the record does not choose.

Pronouncing Shirelle

shuh-RELL

Two syllables with the stress at the back. The Hebrew reading puts the weight differently, closer to shir-EL, and American families use whichever they were taught.

Shirelle sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1969, with 35 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Shirelle sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Back stress gives a two-syllable name a firm landing.
  • Several short forms come out of it and none sounds like the others.
  • It is readable at first sight in English without any teaching.
What to consider
  • Sherelle, Shirell and Shirelle are all recorded and the spelling will need giving.
  • The two possible origins have different stress patterns, so the name is said two ways.
  • Neither reading can be confirmed, so the meaning has to be offered as a pair of options.
