Where it comes from

Our story of Sherrel

For a stretch of the middle of the last century a particular shape was available to American parents: two syllables, an sh or ch at the front, a doubled r in the middle and an l ending, stressed either way. Cheryl, Sherrill, Sherrel, Darrell, Merrill and Ferrell all sit in it, some of them surnames, some of them coinages, and for a while they were read as belonging together whether or not they had anything to do with each other. Then the shape stopped being productive, as they all do, and no new names were built in it. The set is now a reliable dating device: a name in that shape can be placed within about twenty years by ear.

Cheryl, Sherrill and Sherry have all been offered as sources. Cheryl itself was a twentieth-century construction with no documented ancestry, so even the likeliest parent does not settle the question.

Sherrel sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1954, with 33 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Sherrel sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Sher comes off the front as a short form and needs no explaining.
  • It is recorded for boys and for girls, so it leaves a question open rather than closing it.
  • It is short on paper and quick to write.
What to consider
  • Most children with this spelling are girls, but a real minority are boys; either may be taken for the other.
  • Two stress patterns are in circulation and the spelling settles neither.
  • It belongs audibly to one stretch of American naming, which places it in time for most listeners.
