Where it comes from

Our story of Sheria

Sherpa is an ethnic group. The name is Tibetan and means something like easterner — shar for east, pa for people — and it belongs to a community that migrated from eastern Tibet into the Solukhumbu region of Nepal several centuries ago, with its own language, Buddhist tradition and clan structure. It became a job title in English because Sherpas were hired as high-altitude porters on Himalayan expeditions and were very good at it, and the word is now used for a diplomatic aide who does the preparatory work before a summit, which is a pun on the mountain sense. The people are not a profession, the profession includes people who are not Sherpas, and the surname is not a description of anybody's work.

Sheria sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1979, with 31 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Sheria sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both cuts produce short forms and each is a standing name.
  • Six letters with no silent ones make it quick to write.
  • Front stress on three syllables is a comfortable English rhythm.
What to consider
  • Sheri, Sherria and Sharia will all be written for it.
  • The syllable count is unstable, so the name is said two ways.
  • The spelling is close to an Arabic word in common English use.
