Where it comes from

The story of Sheli

Hebrew expresses possession by attaching a pronoun ending to the little word shel, 'of': shel with -i, 'me', gives sheli, 'mine', just as shelo is 'his' and shelah is 'hers'. The same -i closes dodi, 'my beloved', in the line from the Song of Songs — 'I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine' — that is engraved inside many Jewish wedding rings. In the United States the spelling appeared alongside Shelly and Shelley in the decades when short girls' names ending in an ee sound were at their most fashionable, so an American Sheli is most often a Shelly written short.

A short spelling of Shelly, or the Hebrew word for 'mine'

As an English name Sheli belongs with Shelly and Shelley, from a surname for a clearing on a slope, and with the short forms of Michelle and Rochelle. In Hebrew it is the ordinary word sheli, 'mine', which is also used as a girl's name in Israel. The spelling alone cannot say which a particular Sheli is.

Pronouncing Sheli

SHEL-ee

American families usually say SHEL-ee, like Shelly. In Hebrew the stress falls at the end, sheh-LEE.

Sheli sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1968, with 43 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Sheli sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Short, bright and easy to say in English and Hebrew alike.
  • Carries a real Hebrew meaning for families who want one.
  • Reads naturally as a form of Shelly for everyone else.
What to consider
  • Most people will write it Shelly or Shelley, so it will be corrected often.
  • The two pronunciations, SHEL-ee and sheh-LEE, can leave people unsure which one the family means; decide early and say it once.
  • The Hebrew meaning is lovely to those who know it and invisible to most strangers, which is fine as long as nobody expects it to be recognized.
