Shazia
Feminine · “Arabic "fragrant”
Urdu draws its everyday words from Hindi and its poetry from Persian, and the sh and z sounds usually mark the Persian layer. Shazia belongs to that half of the vocabulary — the same layer that gave Turkish its word for soul and Ottoman its court language.

The story of Shazia
Persian was the language of administration and literature across a vast area for centuries — in Mughal India, in Ottoman courts, in Central Asia — and it left the same deposit everywhere it went. Turkish took can, soul, from Persian jān. Urdu took most of its literary and abstract vocabulary from Persian while keeping a Hindi grammar and everyday stock, which is why Urdu poetry can be almost unintelligible to a Hindi speaker while ordinary conversation is not. Names followed the same route: much of the Pakistani name stock is Persian or Arabic-through-Persian rather than local. The American figures for Shazia peak in 1986, with Pakistani immigration.

Arabic "fragrant, aromatic"
Shazia is generally traced to Arabic shadhiya, fragrant or sweet-smelling, from a root meaning to diffuse a scent. A Persian derivation from shād, happy, is also offered. Neither is fully settled. The name is used chiefly in Pakistan and among Urdu-speaking communities rather than in the Arab world, which is one reason the Arabic derivation is not certain.
