Sharen writes a vowel that nobody says. The final syllable of this name has no clear vowel sound at all in English speech, which is why the record carries Sharon, Sharen, Sharyn and Sharin, and why none of them is more correct than the others.

Where it comes from

The story of Sharen

One phrase carried this name into English, and it is not quite what people think. The rose of Sharon appears in the Song of Songs, and neither half of it means what a modern reader assumes: the plant is almost certainly not a rose, and botanists have argued for a crocus, a tulip, a narcissus and a lily without settling it, while gardeners in England and America have since attached the phrase to a hibiscus that grows nowhere near the place. The flower stayed famous, the name came with it, and Sharon became an English girls' name in the twentieth century on the strength of a verse whose plant nobody can identify.

Meaning

the plain

The Hebrew sharon is a landscape word for a level, fertile stretch of country, and it names the coastal plain between the hills and the Mediterranean. It is a description that became a place name and then a person's.

Fashion outlook

Sharen sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is said correctly at first sight by anyone who has met the commoner spelling.
  • The place behind it is real, mapped and still called by that name.
  • It carries several short forms with quite different characters.
What to consider
  • Sharon is the standard spelling and will be written instead, every time.
  • The name belongs firmly to one American generation.
  • The e adds no sound, so the difference exists only on paper.
