Shantia
Feminine
Shantia looks very like a Sanskrit word, and the resemblance is worth handling carefully. Shanti means peace, and it is one of the few Sanskrit words that a great many English speakers have met — because T. S. Eliot ended the most famous poem of the twentieth century by repeating it three times and then explaining, in a footnote, roughly what it meant.

The story of Shantia
The Waste Land ends with a line of Sanskrit — three words of instruction from an Upanishad, and then the word for peace, three times. Eliot annotated his own poem, partly in earnest and partly to pad out a book that was otherwise too short, and his note glosses the repetition as the formal ending of an Upanishad and compares it to the peace which passeth understanding. That is where a large number of English speakers have met the word: not in a religious text but at the end of a poem that was, for most of a century, the thing every literature student read first.

The resemblance to the Sanskrit is almost certainly a coincidence. Shantia belongs to a large American family of names built on a common front element and a set of interchangeable endings, and its dates place it squarely inside that family rather than anywhere near a Sanskrit source. The honest statement is that the name contains a sound that also happens to be a word in another language, which is true of a great many names and proves nothing about any of them.

Fashion outlook
Shantia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Shan and Tia are both available and both are complete names elsewhere.
- The sound is soft and open, and it is read correctly at first sight.
- It resembles a word meaning peace, which is a pleasant thing for a name to resemble even by accident.
- The Sanskrit connection is a resemblance and not an origin, and it would be a shame to teach a child otherwise.
- The stress is genuinely unsettled between two readings.
- It is closely dated to a couple of decades in the late twentieth century.
