Where it comes from

Our story of Shantavia

Octavia was married to Mark Antony for political reasons, was publicly humiliated when he went back to Cleopatra, and was divorced by letter while managing his affairs in Rome. After Actium, when both Antony and Cleopatra were dead, she took his children into her household and raised them — her own two daughters by him, his son by a previous marriage, and the surviving children he had had with Cleopatra, who had been paraded through Rome in her brother's triumph. She brought them up alongside each other. One of those Cleopatra children was married off to a Numidian king and became a queen in north Africa; the line of Antony's descendants through Octavia produced three emperors. Roman writers treated her as a model of decorum, which rather undersells what the arrangement actually required.

The prefix and the ending are free American elements. The middle resembles the back of Octavia, and it may equally be a syllable chosen for its sound. Nothing in the record documents any of the joins.

Fashion outlook

Shantavia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Three short forms come out of it and none sounds like the others.
  • The stress falls where an English reader expects it to.
  • Four syllables give it a formal length without being hard to say.
What to consider
  • Shantavia, Chantavia and Shatavia are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • The syllable count is unstable, so the name gets said two ways.
  • No meaning can honestly be given for any of the three pieces.
