That river has been a political boundary as much as a geographical one. West of it lies Connacht, and after the wars of the sixteen-fifties Cromwell's settlement ordered the dispossessed Irish landowners of the other three provinces to move across it — the choice offered, in the phrase that survives, being Hell or Connacht. The land there was the poorest in the country and the point was that it was defensible from the east. The transplantation was carried out incompletely and chaotically, but the phrase attached itself permanently, and the river has marked a line in Irish memory ever since.
