Serenity
Feminine · “calmness”
Serenity is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 77,550 girls against 75 boys since 1880.
Serenity is the English word itself, lifted straight into use as a name — and behind the word stands Latin serenus, used first of weather: a sky with no clouds in it. Venice called herself La Serenissima, the Most Serene Republic, and European courts addressed princes as Serene Highness, so the word had centuries of ceremony behind it before any child wore it. Four syllables, all soft consonants, with the stress landing in the middle: suh-REN-ih-tee.

The story of Serenity
The Latin adjective serenus described a cloudless sky; serenitas, its noun, came to mean both fair weather and composure of mind. Medieval and early-modern Europe turned it into an honorific — Serenitas Vestra, Your Serenity, addressed to rulers, and the Venetian Republic styled itself La Serenissima for centuries. English took the word as an ordinary abstract noun, and only in the later twentieth century did American parents begin using it as a given name, joining the older English habit of naming children for qualities: Patience, Prudence, Constance, Verity. Its relative Serena, from the same Latin root, had already been in use as a personal name far longer.

The Anne test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Serenity's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Anne climbed just as high around 1915, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Anne's path sketches the road Serenity is walking now.

The trade-off
- Spelled the way the English word is spelled, so it rarely needs repeating or clarifying — an advantage word-names hold over invented ones.
- The meaning is plain to anyone who hears it, with no translation needed.
- Sits in a long English tradition of quality-names — Patience, Verity, Constance — so it has company and precedent.
- Comes with usable short forms (Sera, Seri, Ren) and an older formal cousin, Serena, from the same Latin root.
- Virtue names invite comment. People will make the obvious joke about a loud toddler, and a Serenity hears her own meaning spoken aloud more often than most children do.
- Its rise is very recent and its wave is stepping back from the crest, so the name reads as belonging to a particular span of years rather than to no era at all.
- Four syllables with the stress in the middle need a surname that can hold its own; short, firm family names generally pair more cleanly than long flowing ones.
- It is also the name of the ship in the Firefly series and the 2005 film — a warm association for some, invisible to most.
