Scottie
Feminine · “a Scot”
Scottie is given to both — 6,817 girls and 11,157 boys since 1880. See Scottie as a boy nameSee other names given to both
Scottie began as an affectionate clipping of Scott — a word that once simply meant a person from Scotland — and it has spent a century doing what pet names do best: sounding easy in the mouth while carrying a long word behind it. Two hard consonants, then that soft -ie landing, so it moves like Charlie, Frankie and Ellie. It is being given to babies again in numbers it has not seen before, mostly to girls, with a steady minority of boys.

The story of Scottie
The root is a people, not a word for a quality: Latin writers used Scotti for Gaelic speakers from Ireland, some of whom crossed to the west of what is now Scotland, and the name traveled back into English as a byname for such a person. It hardened into a surname, then — as so many British surnames did — into a first name, common enough in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to earn its own affectionate short forms, Scotty and Scottie. Both were worn by real people of either sex: Frances Scott Fitzgerald, the daughter of F. Scott Fitzgerald, went by Scottie all her life, and the basketball player Scottie Pippen carried the same spelling. Today the -ie form is being registered as a name in its own right rather than a nickname for something longer.
Meaning

Scottie is the pet form of Scott, from the Old English byname Scott, 'a Gael, a Scot'. The older Latin Scotti first named Gaelic-speaking people of Ireland who settled in what became Scotland.

The Shelley test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Scottie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Shelley climbed just as high around 1972, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Shelley's path sketches the road Scottie is walking now.

The trade-off
- Instantly readable and sayable in English: nobody has to be told how to pronounce it.
- Comes with a ready-made formal option, Scott, if a longer version is ever wanted on a document.
- Fits the large family of -ie names given to both girls and boys — Charlie, Frankie, Bobbie — so it will not sound out of place in a classroom.
- Has a documented history going back to a real people and a real place, rather than a recent coinage.
- Scottie and Scotty are both standard, so expect a lifetime of gentle corrections about which ending you use.
- It reads as a nickname to many people. Some will assume there is a longer name behind it and ask what it is short for.
- The Scottish Terrier is called a Scottie, and the Monopoly dog is one. It is a mild, mostly friendly association, but it is there.
- Most Scotties being born now are girls, while older bearers skew male — so strangers meeting the name on paper may guess wrong in either direction until they meet the child.
