Where it comes from

The story of Seraphine

The sixth chapter of Isaiah puts the seraphim above the throne, each with six wings, calling to one another; Christian theology later ranked them first among the nine orders of angels, above the cherubim. That made the word available for naming, and Seraphina was carried by a thirteenth-century Italian saint. French produced Seraphine, and both spread across Catholic Europe. Its American record sits mostly in the late nineteenth century, and it has been returning quietly since.

Meaning

burning ones; the fiery angels

Hebrew seraphim is a plural, from saraph, 'to burn'. The same word names the fiery serpents in the book of Numbers, which is why some scholars read the seraphim as serpentine. The reading is documented. Seraphina and Seraphine are Latin and French feminine names built on the word, formed as Angelina is from angel.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented meaning that is startling and specific rather than a soft gloss.
  • Sera and Fina are both ready short forms and both are established names.
  • Three syllables with a strong ending, which pairs well with a short surname.
What to consider
  • Seraphine, Seraphina, Serafina and Séraphine all circulate and are said differently.
  • It is an unmistakably religious name and will be read as one.
  • The ph is said as an f and will be misspelled by people who have only heard it.
