The story of Seneca
Lucius Annaeus Seneca was a Stoic philosopher, playwright and Nero's tutor and minister; implicated in a conspiracy in 65, he was ordered to die and opened his veins. His letters are among the most read works of Latin prose. Quite separately, the Seneca are the largest of the Six Nations of the Haudenosaunee and hold the western door of the Confederacy; their territory is in western New York, and Seneca Lake, Seneca Falls and Seneca County are named for them. Seneca Falls hosted the first American women's rights convention in 1848. As a given name the American record peaks in 1977, and the two sources are indistinguishable in it.

Contested; the Roman name may mean old
The Roman cognomen Seneca is generally connected to Latin senex, old — a byname for an elder. That reading is standard though not certain. The Seneca nation's English name is entirely separate: it derives from a Dutch or Mahican rendering of an Algonquian word, and the people's own name for themselves is Onödowáʼga:, people of the great hill. The two words are unrelated and the English spelling merges them.

SEN-uh-kuh
Three syllables, stress on the first. Latin would give the same placement with a fuller second vowel. The nation's name is said the same way in English.

The Aurelio test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Seneca's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Aurelio climbed just as high around 1930, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Aurelio's path sketches the road Seneca is walking now.
Seneca sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

- Everyone can say it after one hearing.
- It works for either sex without adjustment.
- The two sources are entirely unrelated and both are substantial.
- Taking a nation's name as a personal name is a decision worth making deliberately.
- The philosopher was Nero's minister as well as his critic, which is a mixed inheritance.
