Where it comes from

The story of Sebrina

What turned a river into a name was a masque. Milton wrote an entertainment for a family's private performance in which a young woman, trapped and immobilised by a sorcerer, is freed by a river spirit summoned with a song. He gave the spirit the river's Roman name and a back-story taken from an old chronicle: a girl drowned in the water who became its guardian. The masque was performed once, at a castle on the Welsh border, and printed a few years later. Almost every literary use of the name in English since descends from that single evening's work, and so, indirectly, does its arrival on American birth certificates.

Meaning

from the Roman name of an English river

The name is the Latin form of the Severn, recorded by Roman writers. Its own origin is British rather than Latin and cannot be traced further back with confidence, but the identification with the river is secure.

Fashion outlook

Sebrina sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Bree sits inside it as a short form that sounds entirely modern.
  • The rhythm is even and the name is comfortable to say quickly.
  • It has a real and very old river behind it rather than an invented origin.
What to consider
  • Sabrina is overwhelmingly standard and this spelling gets corrected for life.
  • The changed letter is inaudible, so the effort is spent entirely on paper.
  • It is tied closely to the decades of its rise.
